We’ve all been there… You see a video of a dancer on Instagram doing the most amazing turn sequence. Or you’re at your own studio watching another dancer and thinking, “why can’t my extension be THAT good.” :/
While we can definitely use these situations as motivation, it can sometimes be easy to go down the wrong path of negativity instead.
How do we try to make sure we don’t start feeling insecure when watching other dancers? Here are some quick tips to help:
1. This might sound contradictory, but try to accept that there is always going to be someone better at a specific skill – I always try to remember that there are others out there with better technique than me. It really helps to keep that realistic expectation in your mind so you don’t set yourself up for disappointment.
2. Spread positivity – Be genuinely happy for other’s talents and accomplishments. Try to be inspired… and use their successes as encouragement for what is possible for you. :)
3. Be grateful – Try to fully appreciate everything you have and where you are in your dance journey. Celebrate how far you’ve come and be positive about how much farther you can go!
4. MOST IMPORTANTLY remember there’s only one you! – No one else dances exactly like you do. You are unique and special. Focus on celebrating who you are and the differences that make you YOU, and there will be no room for negativity. :)
