As we are all heading into another competition season, I wanted to share some things I do to prepare for a competition and convention weekend. If you’re competing with your studio and doing convention it can be a long 3 days of dancing.
A lot of conventions have competition and open classes starting on a Friday. One of the first things I do to get ready is make a list of everything I need for the weekend. I make sure my dance costumes are ready and I have all accessories needed.
The next thing I do is screen shot my schedule for every day of the convention and or competition. This has actually been a real life saver for me because when I’m dancing and tired, it’s sometimes hard to remember what class I have next. Once I have that screen shot I can make it my lock screen on my phone so I can quickly glance at my phone to keep me on track without having to sort through pictures or emails of the schedule.
Once my costumes are packed up, I move on to my dance shoes and make sure I have appropriate shoes for each class. Next I go through my clothing. I try to make sure I have clothes for every class and that I’m dressed appropriately for every style. For instance, I would not want to be in a ballet leotard if I’m taking hip hop. That’s what I love about the clothes from Sugarhaul! I can easily throw on a hoodie that has my name on it for hip hop over my leggings so that I’m dressed appropriately! And what a bonus that my name is all ready on it!
Once I’ve packed my clothes, I move on to electrolytes and snacks. I love a product called liquid IV and I often drink one on Friday before I start dancing and then one every day of the competition or convention. Staying hydrated is so important to make sure you’re dancing your best in every class. Another thing that I have on hand at all times are Gatorade Energy chews. They are small and an easy snack when you start feeling too tired during class. This helps me stay focused because when I get too tired or dehydrated it’s more difficult to remember choreography. I love to pack almonds, raisins and I like to make sure I have fresh fruit.
Once that’s all packed up, I move on to my hair accessories and make up. It’s really important that I have the right make up brushes and all the necessary make up.
Once I’ve crossed everything off my list, then I move on to my mom’s list. I like to make sure we are both very prepared for the weekend!
I hope you all have a very successful competition season and I hope I’ve shared something that might help you get ready for your own competitions!
