Dance competitions are fun. You get to perform on stage and spend lots of time with your dance family. I've competed for the last 9 years and here are my top tips for making the most out of dance competitions.
#1. Have fun!
That is the most important tip. It's not about trophies and placement. Some competitions you will place well and others you won't. Some conventions you will get a scholarship and some you will not. If you focus on having fun and not on placement, trophies and scholarships you will always be happy and not disappointed.
#2 Don't compare yourself to others
Dance is an individual journey. You have to focus on only being better than the dancer that you were before. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Identify what your strengths are and areas that you can improve on. At the next competition work on improving a weakness. If you keep working on your weaknesses you will become a better and better dancer at every competition.
#3 Have lots of great snacks available to fuel your body
Dance competitions can be really long days. If you only eat sugar and junk food you will crash really easily. If you have bananas, trail mix, beef jerky, hummus and vegetables, and granola bars in your dance bag you can grab something healthy when you need a boost of energy and are feeling hungry.
#4 Get tons of sleep right before the competition
I've had to be at competitions right at 7:30 am with my hair and makeup done. If you don't have good sleep leading up to the competition you will get exhausted by the end of the day and not be able to perform well or enjoy it.
#5 Enjoy the time with your dance friends
Dance competitions are really special times where you get to show everyone why you have spent so much time in the dance studio. All the hard work and hours at the studio show when you dance with your team. Enjoy all those moments with your team. Take tons of pictures and have fun.
I hope you have fun at your next dance competition.
